The University of Notre Dame is highlighted in a new report on the importance of scientific research to economic growth.
The study, which was conducted by The Science Coalition, identifies more than 100 companies that exist due to funding received by academic researchers from federal government agencies, including the Department of Agriculture, Department of Energy, National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Standards and Technology, and National Science Foundation.
In describing the impact funding from federal agencies has on the economy, Notre Dame’s Vice President for Research, Robert J. Bernhard, said: “Federal funded research plays a major role in developing and supporting innovation-based economies. We at Notre Dame are committed to using this important source of support to grow our research outputs and be a catalyst for regional and national development.”
Notre Dame researchers have contributed both to the local and national economies through government-funded grants.
A series of research projects conducted by Peter Kogge, Ted H. McCourtney Professor of Computer Science and Engineering, and Jay Brockman, professional specialist of computer science and engineering, led to Emu Solutions Inc.
Additionally, Transposagen Biopharmaceuticals Inc. utilizes a core technology platform based on research conducted by Malcolm Fraser, Rev. Julius A. Nieuwland, C.S.C., Professor of Biological Sciences. The research utilized in these businesses was sponsored by various agencies within the Department of Defense and Department of Agriculture, respectively.
