Active Research Programs
Our department has exceptional strength in research on global health, cancer, rare and neglected diseases, and environmental sciences. Our research programs receive more than $18 million of outside funding annually, primarily from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation.
The faculty conducts research in a number of areas:

- Physiology and biochemistry
- Ecology and population biology
- Genetics and cytogenetics
- Immunology
- Microbiology
- Parasitology
- Vector biology
Between the biological sciences majors and the pre-medical students in other departments, we train almost a thousand new scientists and health care career-bound undergraduates every year. We award an average of 18 Ph.D. degrees per year. Faculty and students connect with the broader community by hosting hundreds of high-school teachers and K-12 students in innovative, hands-on programs.
