Current research and projects includes: Tuberculosis and non-tuberculosis mycobacterial infections; Tuberculosis drug pharmacokinetics in HIV co-infected patients; Pneumocystis PCR applications in immunocompromised hosts; Non-tuberculosis mycobacterial soft tissue infections; HIV and Tuberculosis health care in international resourced impoverished areas; Health care availability in Third-world & developing countries; Antimicrobial prophylaxis in patients with acute leukemia; Medical informatics tools to reduce unnecessary antimicrobial usage.

The research interests of Elitza S. Theel, Ph.D., are in the development of new serologic assays and the evaluation of currently available serologic testing methods to aid in the diagnosis of a variety of bacterial, viral and fungal infectious diseases.

Dr. Theel's research focuses on the development and evaluation of serologic assays for the diagnosis of infections caused by:

  • Borrelia burgdorferi
  • Histoplasma capsulatum
  • Dengue virus
  • Strogyloides stercoralis
